Program Overview: Computer Science at Cambridge

The Computer Science course at the University of Cambridge, formally known as the Computer Science Tripos, is one of the most prestigious computing programs in the world. It evolved from the Diploma in Computer Science — the world's first taught course in computer science, which started in 1953 — and draws on a heritage that stretches back to Alan Turing's foundational work in the 1930s.

This broad and deep program covers all aspects of modern computer science, along with underlying theory and foundations in economics, law, and business. You will develop practical skills in programming across multiple languages including OCaml, Java, C/C++, and Prolog, as well as hardware systems such as chip design.

The three-year course leads to a BA (Hons) degree, with an optional fourth year leading to an additional MEng qualification. Progression to the fourth year is dependent on achieving a sufficiently high standard in third-year examinations, typically a first-class result.

Key Program Highlights

  • Pioneering department with roots dating back to the 1930s, having built the first usable programmable computer in the 1940s
  • Unique Cambridge supervision system providing regular small-group teaching sessions alongside lectures and practicals
  • Located in the heart of Silicon Fen, home to over 1,000 specialist computing and advanced technology companies
  • Optional fourth year offering advanced research-linked study leading to an integrated MEng degree

Curriculum & Modules

The Computer Science Tripos is structured to build a strong foundation in the first two years before offering increasing specialisation. In Years 1 and 2, all courses are compulsory, ensuring a comprehensive grounding across the discipline. From Year 3 onward, you choose your own courses and undertake a substantial individual project with a written dissertation.

Foundations of Computer Science

Core (Year 1)

Introduces the basic principles of programming using OCaml, covering fundamental data structures, algorithms, and problem-solving techniques that underpin all subsequent study.

Discrete Mathematics and Algorithms

Core (Year 1)

Covers essential mathematical foundations including set theory, logic, relations, functions, graph theory, and core algorithmic design and analysis techniques.

Digital Electronics and Computer Architecture

Core (Year 1)

Explores hardware systems from logic gates and sequential circuits through to processor architecture, with assessed laboratory work including chip design practicals.

Object-Oriented Programming and Software Engineering

Core (Years 1–2)

Develops practical programming skills in Java and covers principles of software design, testing, and engineering practices used in real-world development environments.

Operating Systems and Networking

Core (Year 2)

Examines the design and implementation of operating systems, concurrency, memory management, and the fundamentals of computer networking and distributed systems.

Individual Research Project and Dissertation

Core (Year 3) — 25% of final grade

A substantial individual project, usually involving significant programming work, accompanied by a written dissertation. Topics are chosen by the student and often connect with current departmental research.

Elective and Advanced Topics (Years 3–4)

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Computer Graphics and Human-Computer Interaction Cybersecurity and Formal Verification Quantum Computing and Advanced Algorithms
