University of Calabria: Overview & History

The University of Calabria (UNICAL) is a state-run public research university located in Arcavacata di Rende, near Cosenza, in the Calabria region of Southern Italy. Founded in 1972 with the goal of fostering cultural, social, and economic development in the region, it was Italy's first residential campus university and remains one of the few campus-based institutions in the country.

UNICAL is organized into 14 departments offering approximately 80 degree programmes at the bachelor's and master's levels, along with 10 PhD programmes. The university is home to over 950 international students from more than 83 countries, making it the most internationally diverse university in Southern Italy.

The campus spans over 200 hectares of green hills and features a distinctive architectural design by Vittorio Gregotti. Its centerpiece is the two-kilometer-long Pietro Bucci bridge, a reinforced concrete structure housing cube-shaped buildings for departments, laboratories, classrooms, libraries, cinemas, and theatres.
