Program Overview: Bachelor of Science in Medical Physics

The Bachelor of Science in Medical Physics at the University of Bielefeld offers an ideal introduction to a highly topical field with excellent career prospects. This six-semester program provides a comprehensive overview of all areas of physics alongside the theoretical and experimental foundations of the subject, complemented by essential knowledge of medicine including physiology, anatomy, and biochemistry.

Medical physicists develop innovative assistance systems for minimally invasive surgery, create new medical imaging procedures, and design highly precise treatment methods using technologies such as virtual reality and artificial intelligence. The program prepares you for further training as a medical physics expert at hospitals, as well as for careers in research and development within companies, non-university institutes, and medical technology.

As one of the first physics faculties in Germany to do so, the Faculty of Physics at Bielefeld integrates a mathematical preliminary course into the first weeks of the program to ease the transition from school to university. Students also acquire important digital skills from the very first semester, including initial programming skills with Python.

Key Program Highlights

  • Integrated mathematical preparatory course in the first weeks to strengthen foundational skills for physics studies
  • Interdisciplinary curriculum combining physics fundamentals with medical knowledge in anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry
  • Digital skills training from semester one, including Python programming for scientific applications
  • Close collaboration between the Faculty of Physics and medical professionals at partner hospitals and clinics
