Program Overview: MSc in Medical Physics at BME

The Medical Physics MSc at Budapest University of Technology and Economics is designed to educate medical physicists with interdisciplinary theoretical and practical knowledge, enabling them to perform clinical tasks, participate in academic and industrial research, and develop and operate methods and equipment using modern technologies. BME was the first and only institution in Hungary to launch an English-language master's program in Medical Physics, starting in the 2024/25 academic year.

Students gain comprehensive knowledge of medical imaging, nuclear medicine (diagnostics and therapy), radiotherapy, radiation protection, and radiobiology, equipping them to meet the specific requirements of medical physics with professional and ethical awareness. The program is open not only to BSc in Physics graduates but also to those holding degrees in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

Medical Physics MSc students receive a well-balanced combination of courses on medical physics, life sciences, physics, computer and data science, as well as laboratory work. Upon graduation, students are fully prepared to continue their studies at the doctoral level in the Doctoral School of Physical Sciences at BME or to enter the workforce in clinical, industrial, or research settings.

Key Program Highlights

  • First and only English-language Medical Physics MSc in Hungary, launched at BME in the 2024/25 academic year
  • Interdisciplinary curriculum combining medical physics, life sciences, computer and data science, and hands-on laboratory work
  • Open to graduates from Physics, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, and Mechanical Engineering
  • Independent laboratory practices and thesis topics linked to real research and development tasks in the medical physics field

Curriculum and Modules

The Medical Physics MSc curriculum is structured across four semesters and covers foundational medical physics subjects, advanced specialization topics, and substantial laboratory and thesis work. The natural science, technological, and medical aspects of the program are equally emphasized, ensuring graduates have a versatile and robust skill set.

Physical Basis of X-ray Diagnostics

This module covers the fundamental physics principles underlying X-ray imaging technologies used in clinical diagnostics, including X-ray generation, interaction with matter, and image formation techniques.

Physical Basis of Radiotherapy

Students explore the physics of therapeutic radiation, including dose calculation, treatment planning, and the interaction of ionizing radiation with biological tissues for cancer treatment applications.

Nuclear Medicine

This module introduces the principles of nuclear medicine for both diagnostics and therapy, covering radiotracer techniques, imaging modalities such as PET and SPECT, and therapeutic applications of radiopharmaceuticals.

Radiation Protection in Medical Physics

Students learn the principles and regulations of radiation protection as applied to medical settings, including dosimetry, shielding design, regulatory frameworks, and patient and staff safety protocols.

Medical Imaging

A comprehensive module covering a range of medical imaging modalities including CT, MRI, ultrasound, and nuclear imaging, with emphasis on the underlying physics and clinical applications of each technique.

Radiobiology

This module examines the biological effects of ionizing radiation at the cellular and tissue level, providing the scientific foundation for understanding radiation therapy outcomes and radiation protection standards.

Elective Modules and Advanced Topics

Advanced Radiotherapy Techniques Magnetic Resonance and Clinical Applications Monte Carlo Simulations Artificial Intelligence in Data Science
