Master of Engineering (MEng) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
University of Aberdeen
Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Program Overview: MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering
The MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Aberdeen is a five-year integrated masters program that provides an advanced understanding of core electrical and electronic engineering principles. The program is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and serves as your first step towards achieving Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
The first two years cover general engineering fundamentals across chemical, mechanical, petroleum, electrical/electronics, and civil disciplines, giving you broad foundational knowledge before you specialise. From year three onwards, you focus on your chosen discipline in greater depth, with the final year dedicated to an advanced individual project and specialist modules at masters level.
Teaching is supported by dedicated laboratories for satellite communications, robotics, lasers, computer-aided design, and the Aberdeen HVDC Research Centre. Aberdeen is recognised by the Royal Academy of Engineering as one of 13 engineering hot spots in the UK, with over 8,000 engineering businesses in the city and surrounding region.
Key Program Highlights
- IET-accredited program providing the full educational base for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration
- Interdisciplinary first two years allow you to explore all five engineering disciplines before choosing your specialisation
- Access to state-of-the-art facilities including robotics, laser, HVDC power systems, and satellite communications laboratories
- Strong industry links in one of the UK's top engineering regions with opportunities for industry-based final year projects
Curriculum and Modules
The MEng curriculum is structured across five years, progressing from broad engineering fundamentals to advanced specialist topics. You do not need to finalise your choice of specialisation until the start of third year, and it is possible to transfer between BEng and MEng pathways provided grade requirements are met.
Engineering Mathematics and Computational Methods
Core ModuleCovers essential mathematical techniques used throughout engineering, including calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and numerical methods applied to engineering problems.
Principles of Electronics and Circuit Analysis
Core ModuleIntroduces fundamental concepts of electrical and electronics within a general engineering context, covering DC circuit analysis, electronic amplifiers, digital circuits, optoelectronics, and AC theory.
Power Systems and Electrical Machines
Core ModuleExplores electrical power generation, transmission, and distribution systems alongside the principles and design of electrical machines used in industrial applications.
Digital Communications Engineering
Core ModuleCovers fundamentals of digital communications including asynchronous data, GPS devices, Digital Multiplex (DMX) control bus, Remote Device Management (RDM) protocol, and Controller Area Network (CAN) for industrial and transport applications.
Control Systems and State-Space Methods
Core ModuleCovers both continuous-time and discrete-time (digital) state-space control of linear systems, preparing you to design and analyse feedback control systems for engineering applications.
MEng Individual Project
Core ModuleA substantial masters-level project occupying half of your final year study time, which can be undertaken in Aberdeen, abroad, or with one of the School's many industry partners to gain hands-on experience with real-world engineering challenges.
