Military Science at Texas State University — Program Overview
The Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (AROTC) Program at Texas State University is designed to develop the professional skills vital to Army officers. The purpose of the program is to educate, develop, and inspire qualified students for a commission in the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve, or Army National Guard.
The program of instruction challenges each cadet through both indoor and outdoor settings, including classroom instruction, physical fitness training, land navigation, marksmanship, and other military activities. Cadets develop management and leadership skills that are applicable to any profession while building confidence, discipline, and personal responsibility.
The AROTC program consists of two phases: the Basic Course during the freshman and sophomore years, and the Advanced Course during the junior and senior years. Cadets completing AROTC fulfill all requirements to earn a Minor in Military Science, which requires 23 semester credit hours, and can be paired with any undergraduate major at Texas State.
