The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (B.A.I.S.) at Texas State University prepares students for careers in an increasingly interconnected world. Housed within the Center for International Studies in the College of Liberal Arts, the program combines interdisciplinary coursework in political science, history, geography, economics, and world languages to build a comprehensive understanding of global affairs.

Students choose from eight concentration areas including International Relations, Asian Studies, European Studies, Global Security Studies, International Business, Latin American Studies, Middle East/African Studies, Russian/East European Studies, and Travel and Tourism. All majors are required to complete a global academic experience, which can be fulfilled through an education abroad course or an approved international internship.

The program can be completed at the San Marcos campus or the Mexico Queretaro campus, giving students unique flexibility. Curriculum and Modules

The B.A.I.S. curriculum requires completion of the Texas State general education core curriculum, an International Studies core of 41 hours, and concentration-specific coursework. Students must also complete additional hours in English literature and mathematics, science, logic, or computer science beyond the general core requirements.

International Studies Core

Foundational interdisciplinary coursework covering international affairs, comparative politics, world history, cultural geography, and global economics. This core provides the analytical framework for all concentrations.

Foreign Language Requirement

Students develop proficiency in a foreign language relevant to their chosen concentration. Language options include Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, and Russian, among others.

Concentration Coursework

Advanced courses specific to the student's chosen concentration area, such as International Relations, Global Security Studies, or Latin American Studies. No more than three courses may be taken from the same discipline.

A senior-level capstone seminar exploring international topics through reading, writing, research, and group discussion. Students produce a significant research paper demonstrating mastery of their field.

Global Academic Experience

A required education abroad course or approved international internship (IS 4387) involving international work, service, or group research. This experiential component is central to the program's mission.
