COMMUNICATION DESIGN

Design your Future

The field of design has dramatically exploded over the past decade. In addition to being recruited as visual designers, companies seek out Communication Design grads as problem-solvers, thinkers and strategists who create solutions for communities and businesses. From designing trademarks, web sites, packaging, creating social media content or advertising for national brands, to educating the public about societal and health issues, to designing digital products and software solutions that solve complex business problems, earning your BFA in Communication Design prepares you for a future that fulfills your individual creative passions.

Why we're Different

  • Many design programs are successful in teaching basic design principles and theory, but the Communication Design Program at Texas State University is renowned for teaching their graduates how to be creative and highly adaptable practitioners in the ever-changing field of design.
  • We have strong ties with national businesses and organizations that offer job-shadowing, internships, mentoring, and meetups. Located between Austin and San Antonio, we’re rich with opportunities for our students to engage with area design professionals inside and outside of the classroom.
  • Our graduates find placements in companies such as IBM, Vrbo, USAA, McGarrah Jessee, DDB, H-E-B Digital, Helm’s Workshop, Indeed, Disney, Google, Microsoft, Spotify, Verizon, frog design, and GSD&M.
  • Created in 1893, Texas State University (originally Southwest Normal School) was established as a teacher’s college and our dedication to teaching is still a strong part of the university experience. In the School of Art and Design faculty get to know their students and serve as advocates and mentors — often beyond graduation.

Curriculum

Students seeking the BFA in Communication Design–in addition to their general studies, art foundations, art history, and art and design electives—engage in a rigorous study within their major. The Communication Design Program offers four specific courses that serve as the foundation to prepare students for advanced study. The outcome of this curriculum is the preparation of a superior portfolio with a focus on enabling students to become excellent critical thinkers, fearless makers, and effective communicators as they enter the professional field of communication design. Courses in interactive design, typography, art direction, corporate identity, sustainable packaging, brand experience, human-centered design, environmental graphics, and design research prepare the student for professional practice. Students may further their education with independent study courses, job shadowing, and professional internships.

The Communication Design courses are taught in a studio environment. The Mitte Complex has Macintosh labs, an open lab for student use, digital color printing availability including RISO, digital still and video camera checkout, and a photography studio and a multidisciplinary innovation lab equipped with a laser cutter, CNC router, 3D printer and die cutter.
