Program Overview: B.S. in Journalism at Texas State University
The Bachelor of Science in Journalism at Texas State University provides a strong foundation in writing, data analysis, editing, and ethics, preparing students to work as multimedia, digital, and print journalists. Curriculum and Course Modules
The B.S. in Journalism requires 120 semester hours, including general education core curriculum courses, 46 hours in the major, and a minor selected from the university's approved list. Students must earn a C or better in all core Mass Communication courses and prerequisite courses to progress through the program.
Introduction to Mass Communication (MC 1301)

Media Writing (MC 1313)
3 Credit HoursAn introduction to the major forms of media writing including electronic media, journalism, and digital formats. This writing-intensive course builds foundational skills for all journalism coursework.
Media and Society (MC 4381)
3 Credit HoursAn examination of the roles of mass media in American society, including analysis of the philosophical basis of media structure, mass media as business, and media effects on the public.
Reporting and News Writing
3 Credit HoursStudents develop advanced reporting skills including beat coverage, investigative techniques, and multimedia storytelling. The course emphasizes ethical and objective journalism across platforms.
Media Law and Ethics
3 Credit HoursCovers the legal and ethical frameworks governing journalism, advertising, electronic media, and public relations. Students learn about press freedom, libel, privacy, and professional responsibility.
Media Practicum (MC 2111)
1 Credit HourStudents perform supervised media work of at least 60 hours for the semester under a faculty contract. This practicum may be repeated twice for additional credit.

Admission Requirements
Admission to the B.S. in Journalism program at Texas State University is open to students who meet the university's general admission standards. Students admitted with an overall GPA of at least 2.25 and a C or higher in MC 1301 are automatically admitted to their selected major in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
