The Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest (TUS) is a public technological university established on 1 October 2021 through the merger of Athlone Institute of Technology and Limerick Institute of Technology. It is the third technological university to be established in Ireland and serves both the midlands and mid-west regions of the country.
TUS operates across six campuses situated in four counties and three provinces within Ireland, with locations in Limerick, Athlone, Thurles, Clonmel, and Ennis. With principal campuses at Limerick and Athlone, the university is driving regional development through education, research, and commercial collaboration.
The university is home to over 15,000 students representing more than 100 nationalities and employs approximately 2,000 staff. TUS has been awarded a QS 5 Stars rating and is ranked in the top 150 universities in Northern Europe according to the QS World University Rankings 2026.
Key Milestones
- 1852: Earliest roots traced to the School of Ornamental Art on Leamy Street, Limerick, which later became the Limerick School of Art and Design.
- 1970: Athlone Regional Technical College established by the Irish Government, later becoming Athlone Institute of Technology in 1997.
- 2019: AIT-LIT Consortium (ALTU) formed with the intention of creating a technological university for the mid-west and midlands regions.
- 2021: TUS officially opened on 1 October 2021 as Ireland's third technological university, with Vincent Cunnane appointed as first president.
