Program Overview: M.Sc. Mechatronics, Robotics and Biomechanical Engineering at TUM

The Master of Science in Mechatronics, Robotics and Biomechanical Engineering (MRBE) at the Technical University of Munich prepares you to understand, design, and construct intelligent mechatronic and robotic systems according to specific requirements. This interdisciplinary program operates at the interface between mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science, equipping you with cutting-edge skills in one of the most innovative engineering fields.

You will engage with topics including control and circuit technology, numerical simulation of mechanical structures, programming, software development, machine learning, and human-machine interaction. The program offers great flexibility in creating your individual study plan, allowing you to specialize in areas such as digital mechatronic systems, control of complex systems, engineering mechanics, or biomechatronics.

Offered by the TUM School of Engineering and Design, the program is housed at TUM's Garching campus, which is the university's largest campus and home to its mechanical engineering and informatics departments. As a graduate, you will be holistically trained as an interdisciplinary leader with proven expertise across mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and information technology.

Key Program Highlights

  • Strong interdisciplinary curriculum bridging mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science
  • Flexible study plan with specialization options in digital mechatronic systems, biomechatronics, and more
  • Hands-on access to state-of-the-art robotics labs and research facilities at TUM's Garching campus
  • Intake available in both winter and summer semesters, providing flexible start dates

Curriculum and Modules

The MRBE curriculum is structured across four semesters with 120 ECTS credits. You choose master's modules from several elective areas including Overall System, Control Engineering, Mechanics, Human and Biomechanics, Electrical Engineering including Energy Technology, Computer Science, and an Advanced Elective Area, giving you the freedom to tailor your studies to your career goals.

Covers automation technology, development of smart distributed embedded systems, methods of product development, robot dynamics, and medical automation.

Control Engineering

Varies by module selection

Includes modern control theory (levels 1-3), mechatronic device technology, and control of discrete event systems.

Focuses on advanced engineering mechanics, numerical simulation of mechanical structures, and computational methods for complex systems.

Human and Biomechanics

Varies by module selection

Explores human-machine interaction, biomechanical systems, and the design of human-centered robotic and mechatronic devices.

Electrical Engineering incl. Energy Technology

Varies by module selection

Covers circuit technology, sensor systems, power electronics, and energy-efficient design for mechatronic applications.

Master's Thesis

30 ECTS

An independent research project conducted in the final semester, demonstrating your ability to apply scientific methods to solve complex engineering problems in mechatronics or robotics.

Scholarships and Funding

TUM and the German government offer several funding opportunities for international students. These scholarships can help offset living expenses and, in some cases, tuition fees for non-EU/EEA students. Contact Uni4Edu for assistance in identifying and applying for the most suitable funding options.

Deutschlandstipendium (Germany Scholarship)

EUR 300 per month (minimum 2 semesters)

A merit-and-engagement-based scholarship open to all enrolled students regardless of nationality. TUM awards approximately 800 Deutschlandstipendium scholarships each year, funded jointly by private donors and the German federal government.

TUM Scholarship for International Students

EUR 500 to EUR 1,800 per semester (one-time aid, renewable)

Funded by the Bavarian government, this need-and-merit-based scholarship supports international students who are not eligible for German state funding (BAfoG). Students may reapply each semester for a maximum funding period of 36 months.

TUM Tuition Fee Waiver Scholarships

Full or partial tuition fee waiver

Available to international students from non-EU/EEA countries, these merit-based and need-based waivers can cover tuition fees for up to two semesters. Eligibility is based on academic excellence and demonstrated financial need.

For detailed tuition fee information, please contact Uni4Edu — we will guide you through the costs and available funding options for this program.
