The Master of Science in Computational Mechanics at TUM is structured along the disciplines of structural and fluid mechanics, mathematics, and computer science. Founded in 2000 by the Civil Engineering faculty, the program is designed for approximately 30 students per intake, ensuring a small cohort size and an international, interdisciplinary learning environment. You will gain key skills in continuum and fluid mechanics, finite element analysis, and computational materials modeling, with course content spanning computational dynamics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.
This research-oriented program trains highly qualified professionals for both industry and academia. About one third of graduates go on to pursue doctoral studies, while others enter careers across automotive, aerospace, civil, and mechanical engineering sectors. Voluntary internship opportunities are available at leading local companies such as BMW, Siemens, MTU, MAN, and EADS.

Curriculum and Modules
The program requires 120 ECTS credits: 90 from coursework modules and 30 from the Master's thesis. The first semester establishes a solid foundation in mechanics and programming through mandatory modules, while the second and third semesters allow specialization through core electives and free electives. The fourth semester is fully dedicated to the Master's thesis, which can be written at TUM or in cooperation with industry partners.
Structural Mechanics and Analysis
6 ECTSCovers fundamental principles of structural mechanics including stability theory, theory of plates, and advanced analysis methods essential for computational modeling of structures.
Fluid Mechanics
6 ECTSProvides a deep understanding of fluid mechanics principles, flow equations, and numerical methods for computational fluid dynamics applications in engineering.
Computational Mechanics
6 ECTSIntroduces core computational methods including linear and nonlinear finite element methods, discretization techniques, and numerical approximation methods for solving mechanical problems.
Computation in Engineering
6 ECTSFocuses on programming principles, software development, and computational tools used in engineering simulation, including a tailored introduction to C++ during an onboarding week.
Software Lab
6 ECTSAn interdisciplinary team project spanning the second and third semesters where groups of 3-6 students develop software components to solve real engineering problems.
Master's Thesis
