Genetic Counsellors MSc
University of Siena Main Campus, Italy
The Master’s Degree in Genetic Counselling is the first program of its kind in Italy, specifically designed to train the professional figure of the genetic counsellor. Entirely focused on bridging scientific knowledge with patient-centered care, the program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices of clinical, medical, and laboratory genetics.
Genetic counsellors are non-medical health professionals who play a pivotal role in modern healthcare systems. Working in close collaboration with medical geneticists, they support patients and families in understanding the medical, psychological, and social implications of genetic conditions. While clinical evaluation and diagnosis remain the responsibility of the medical geneticist, genetic counsellors independently conduct genetic counselling sessions in contexts where a direct clinical diagnosis is not required.
The program covers all major areas in which genetic counselling is applied. This includes prenatal and pre-conceptional counselling, counselling in infertility and assisted reproduction, as well as counselling in cancer genetics and hereditary disease risk assessment. Students will also gain exposure to emerging fields such as pharmacogenomics and genomic medicine, which are increasingly shaping the future of healthcare.
The course structure balances theoretical instruction with practical training. Lectures provide the scientific foundations of human genetics, genomics, and molecular biology, as well as essential knowledge in psychology, bioethics, and communication skills. Practical activities—including supervised internships, role-playing, and case study analyses—allow students to develop the interpersonal, counselling, and problem-solving skills required in clinical practice.
Graduates of the program are prepared to work in both public and private medical genetics services, contributing to multidisciplinary healthcare teams. Their expertise is crucial in supporting informed patient decision-making, improving healthcare outcomes, and promoting genetic literacy in society.
By integrating scientific rigor with practical and interpersonal skills, the Master’s Degree in Genetic Counselling trains highly qualified professionals ready to address the challenges of personalized medicine and the growing demand for genetic healthcare services.
