Program Overview: Medical Laboratory Technology at Saskatchewan Polytechnic
The Medical Laboratory Technology program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic is a nationally accredited two-and-a-half-year advanced diploma offered at the Saskatoon campus. Experienced instructors guide you through a well-rounded curriculum that integrates classroom theory, hands-on laboratory work, and real clinical experiences in hospitals and laboratories across Saskatchewan.
This program immerses you in a dynamic diagnostic environment where you will work both independently and as part of a healthcare team to perform complex procedures and tests on various human specimens. You will develop expertise in clinical chemistry, microbiology, hematology, hemopathology, histotechnology, immunology, transfusion science, and specimen collection and handling.
Upon graduation, you will be eligible to write the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) national certification exam, which entitles you to work anywhere in Canada and register as a licensed medical laboratory technologist with the Saskatchewan Society of Medical Laboratory Technologists (SSMLT). You can also ladder your advanced diploma into a Bachelor of Applied Management at Saskatchewan Polytechnic or a degree program at the University of Regina or Athabasca University.

Program content is based on national and provincial competency profiles established by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science, with additional topics addressing local healthcare needs.
You will study the principles and practice of clinical chemistry, learning to perform and analyze biochemical tests on body fluids. Coursework covers analytical techniques, instrumentation, quality assurance, and the correlation of laboratory results with clinical conditions.
This module covers the study of blood cells, coagulation processes, and blood disorders. You will practice, build, and demonstrate abilities in hematology through assignments, practical labs, simulation, and competency assessments meeting nationally accepted standards.
You will learn the theory and skills required to prepare, culture, incubate, and stain clinical microbiology specimens. The module covers identification of pathogenic organisms and their role in infectious disease diagnosis.
This module focuses on immunohematology and transfusion medicine, including blood typing, antibody identification, crossmatching, and safe transfusion practices. You will develop competencies through practical labs and simulation exercises.
