Program Overview: Mechanical Engineering Technology Diploma
The Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) diploma at Saskatchewan Polytechnic bridges engineering and technical fields, combining theories of science and engineering with practical hands-on applications to problem-solve and innovate. This two-year program is delivered at the Saskatoon Campus and is accredited by Technology Accreditation Canada (TAC) at the Technologist level.
The program focuses on three primary areas of content: mechanical design and drafting, industrial and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems, and process instrumentation. You will learn how to evaluate, design, and implement a wide variety of energy systems, including power generation, fluid power, piping networks, and ventilation systems, while also investigating effective green building design and energy-use strategies.
Saskatchewan Polytechnic's hands-on approach to learning means you will design a complete air conditioning system, use cutting-edge software to design a machine, conduct an applied research project, and troubleshoot solutions on a technical project. Graduates can ladder their diploma into bachelor of engineering or technology degree programs at institutions such as Lakehead University, Memorial University, or Queen's University.
Key Program Highlights
- TAC-accredited program at the Technologist level, providing an expedited path to P.Tech. or C.Tech. professional registration with Technology Professionals Saskatchewan
- Hands-on, applied learning approach covering mechanical design, HVAC systems, and process instrumentation with industry-standard tools and software
- Diploma laddering opportunities into bachelor's degree programs at Lakehead University, Memorial University, Queen's University, or Saskatchewan Polytechnic's Bachelor of Applied Management
- Graduates eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) and Saskatchewan's Graduate Retention Program offering up to CAD 20,000 in tuition rebates
Curriculum and Modules
The Mechanical Engineering Technology diploma spans 78 weeks across two years, with the first year consisting of 40 weeks and the second year of 38 weeks. The curriculum integrates three core content areas — mechanical design and development, thermal-fluid energy systems, and process instrumentation — with progressive hands-on laboratory exercises and an applied research capstone project.
Develop foundational skills in computer-aided design and technical drafting, learning industry-standard CAD software to create 2D and 3D mechanical drawings and engineering documentation.
Study the principles of forces, equilibrium, and motion as applied to engineering systems. You will analyze static structures and dynamic mechanical systems to solve practical engineering problems.
Learn to evaluate, design, and implement energy systems including power generation, industrial processes, fluid power and hydraulics, piping networks, and ventilation and air-conditioning systems, including emerging green technologies.
Develop competency in process instrumentation, examining a variety of instrumentation devices, sensors, signal conditioning, measurement characteristics, and industrial communication protocols and networks.
Gain foundational knowledge in electrical principles and electronic systems relevant to mechanical engineering technology, including circuit analysis and electrical measurement techniques.
