Program Overview: Medicine at Riga Stradiņš University

The Medicine program at Riga Stradiņš University (RSU) is a six-year, English-taught professional study program that awards graduates a Medical Doctor (MD) degree. The program is specifically designed to prepare well-educated and professionally qualified doctors through a combination of rigorous theoretical education and extensive practical clinical training.

Student cooperation and active engagement in group work characterise the program. The studies involve working on a series of patient-centred problems that reveal the basic principles influencing human health and disease, with students gaining practical clinical skills through the opportunity to work with patients from the third year onwards.

RSU's Faculty of Medicine is deeply integrated with clinical practice, with students learning at Latvia's leading medical institutions including Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital, the Children's Clinical University Hospital, Riga East University Hospital, and the Hospital of Traumatology and Orthopaedics. The MD degree is recognised across all EU and EEA member states, enabling graduates to pursue residency programs and medical careers worldwide.

Key Program Highlights

  • Early clinical exposure from Year 3 at Latvia's largest teaching hospitals, with access to the largest medical simulation centre in the Baltics (RSU METC)
  • Two annual intakes (September and February), providing flexible entry options for international students from different academic calendars
  • Small group learning environment with an approximately 1:10 teacher-to-student ratio, ensuring personalised attention and interactive education
