Writing in College (WRIT 1103)

4 credit hours

An introduction to college-level writing with attention to analytical thinking, identifying audiences, evaluating source materials, developing arguable theses, and using disciplinary citation conventions.

Gender and Literature

4 credit hours

Examines how historical and cultural notions of gender shape literary narratives and explores the ways gender operates to constrain or liberate literary creativity, with emphasis on critical approaches and textual analysis.

Multicultural Children's Literature

4 credit hours

A survey of multicultural children's literature covering various authors and illustrators across genres including oral tradition, fantasy, realistic and historical fiction, poetry, and picture books.

Introduction to Creative Process

1 credit hour

An introduction to the creative process and the writing of poetry, short fiction, plays, or creative nonfiction, taught by the current Randolph Writer in Residence. First-year students have registration priority.

Senior Seminar (ENGL 4493)

4 credit hours

A capstone course required of all English majors designed to develop critical perspectives in literature, increasing understanding of key concepts such as genre, period, school, and critical approach through essays and oral presentations.

Senior Thesis

4 credit hours

Each student works closely with a faculty supervisor to prepare a major research paper of approximately 15-20 pages, culminating in an oral presentation to faculty and peers.
