Program Overview: Modern and Contemporary History BA (Hons)
This program provides the opportunity to study British, European, and American history from the modern period to the present day. You will examine contemporary issues in their historical context, exploring the development of modern society and politics from the eighteenth century onward.
You will be introduced to different historiographical schools of thought, from chronological and geographical approaches to social, environmental, economic, cultural, and gender history. Through studying topics such as the Cold War, Nazi Germany, and Britain from the Blitz to Brexit, you will develop critical analytical skills and a deep understanding of the forces that have shaped the modern world.

Introduction to Modern History 1815-1914

Historiography and Historical Methods
20 UK CreditsThis module introduces you to the theory and practice of historical research, including the critical evaluation of primary and secondary sources, historiographical debates, and academic writing conventions.
Specialised Topic Module (e.g. Nazi Germany or the Cold War)
20 UK CreditsIn Years 2 and 3, you delve deeper into specialised topics such as Nazi Germany, the Cold War, or Russia and the Ukraine conflict, analysing primary sources and constructing original arguments.
Dissertation
