Program Overview: History and Archaeology BA (Hons)
History and Archaeology are complementary subjects that together inform wide-ranging interpretations of the past. From early Prehistory to the recent past, you will choose from topics covering aspects of the history and archaeology of Wales, Britain, Europe and the wider world.
Through the study of both documentary sources and material culture, you will explore political, social and cultural aspects of the past while developing practical and transferable skills. During the first year you will build a strong foundation in both disciplines before progressing to more specialised work in subsequent years.
Placement Year and International Experience Year options are available for this program, allowing you to gain valuable real-world experience or study abroad. The program is delivered by Bangor University's award-winning department of History and Archaeology, situated in North Wales between the mountains of Snowdonia and the Menai Strait.

Curriculum and Modules
The History and Archaeology BA (Hons) curriculum is designed to build a strong interdisciplinary foundation in Year 1 before allowing deeper specialisation in Years 2 and 3. You will study compulsory modules in both history and archaeology alongside optional heritage and elective modules throughout the program.
The Archaeology of the British Isles
20 creditsAn introduction to the archaeology of the British Isles from prehistory through to the contemporary period, covering 40,000 years of dramatic changes in technology, social organisation, settlement, burial practice and monument building.
Introduction to History and Heritage
20 creditsIntroduces the nature of heritage, its relationship with history and archaeology, and its significance in shaping public perceptions of the past. Topics include museum development, state involvement in heritage, and the use of the past in shaping identity.
Historical Skills and Methods
20 creditsDevelops core skills in historical analysis, source criticism and academic writing. Students learn to evaluate documentary evidence and construct well-supported historical arguments.
Archaeological Theory and Practice
20 creditsProvides foundational training in archaeological theory, fieldwork methodology and the interpretation of material culture. Students gain practical skills essential for archaeological investigation.
Dissertation or Independent Research Project
40 creditsA final-year capstone project in which students undertake independent research on a topic of their choice within history or archaeology, producing a substantial piece of specialised academic work.
Work Placement Module
20 creditsAvailable in Years 2 and 3, this module enables students to complete assessed work placements at archives, archaeological units, museums, heritage centres or other relevant organisations.
