Program Overview: MSc Conservation and Land Management

The MSc Conservation and Land Management at Bangor University provides you with a broad and balanced understanding of the fundamental science underpinning conservation and land use. Curriculum and Modules

The MSc Conservation and Land Management is structured in two parts. Part 1 (120 credits) runs from September to May and consists of four taught modules, a Field Visit module, and a Research Methods module component. Part 2 (60 credits) is the dissertation phase running from end of May to September, giving you the opportunity to specialise in your chosen field through a supervised research project.

Conservation Science

20 credits

Examines the focus of conservation attention in a post-wild world, the relative roles of ecology, economics and social science in conservation, and the drivers of biodiversity loss worldwide. You will critically analyse conservation policy including market-like mechanisms.

Research Methods

20 credits

Prepares you for the dissertation stage with an introduction to hypothesis generation, sampling, study design, spatial methods, social research methods, and quantitative and qualitative analysis. Includes practicals and field visits illustrating research principles.

Field Visit Module

20 credits

An annual programme of scientific visits related to conservation and land management. The main purpose is to appreciate the range of activities different conservation organisations undertake and to understand their management approaches.

Land Use and Environmental Management

20 credits

Explores how economic activities such as farming and forestry can be managed in an environmentally sustainable way, and how human enjoyment of the countryside can be incorporated within integrated land use planning.

Habitat and Species Conservation

20 credits

Focuses on the ecology of threatened species and habitats, examining the natural and human factors influencing wildlife and landscapes. You will study practical approaches to habitat management and species recovery.

MSc Dissertation

60 credits

A supervised research project allowing you to specialise in your chosen field. Dissertation topics are related to your individual interests and must demonstrate wide reading, critical analysis, and appropriate use of advanced techniques.
