Curriculum & Modules

The Biology with Biotechnology BSc (Hons) follows a structured three-year curriculum that builds from foundational biological sciences to advanced specialist biotechnology topics. You will develop both theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical laboratory and field skills through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, and extensive practical sessions.

Cell Biology and Genetics

20 credits

An introduction to the structure and function of cells, covering cell division, gene expression, and the molecular basis of inheritance. This module lays the groundwork for understanding how organisms develop and function at the cellular level.

Microbiology and Biotechnology

20 credits

Explores the biology of microorganisms and their applications in biotechnology, including fermentation, bioremediation, and pharmaceutical production. You will gain practical experience in microbiological laboratory techniques.

Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering

20 credits

Covers the principles and techniques of molecular biology, including DNA cloning, PCR, gene editing, and recombinant DNA technology. Emphasis is placed on practical application and understanding of current genetic engineering methodologies.

Ecology and Environmental Biology

20 credits

Examines the interactions between organisms and their environment, including population dynamics, community ecology, and ecosystem processes. Field work in Bangor's diverse local habitats forms a key component of this module.

Plant Biology and Biotechnology

20 credits

Focuses on plant structure, physiology, and the application of biotechnology in agriculture and crop improvement. Topics include plant tissue culture, genetic modification of crops, and plant product biochemistry.

Research Project in Biotechnology

40 credits

A substantial independent research project in your final year, allowing you to investigate a biotechnology topic in depth under the supervision of an active researcher. You will develop skills in experimental design, data analysis, scientific writing, and presentation.
