Why Study Sociology?

Sociology examines how humans behave and relate to each other in a range of social institutions, from individual households to different cultures to entire societies. This area of study will help you understand the social dynamics of different groups, and specialists can ultimately have an impact in developing more effective social policy. Sociology majors have a wide array of career options, including counseling, education, law, ministry, community development, social work, and more.

Sociology Student Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate understanding of historical and contemporary sociological knowledge, theories, and ideas.
2. Illustrate systematic approach to evaluating sources of literature and scholarly works.
3. Demonstrate scientific approach to planning, conducting, and reporting on research.
4. Demonstrate familiarity with discipline’s diverse fields, paradigms and topics that include critical analyses of issues relevant to race, ethnicity, gender, privilege, inequality, urban affairs, citizenship, justice, and social problems.

Students who complete the major requirements for a bachelor of arts (BA) in sociology will be able to analyze patterns of human relationships in complex societies—both in the United States and beyond—as they prepare for graduate school or careers in a wide range of field
