Biotechnology and Biodesign MRes

The Biotechnology and Biodesign MRes programme integrates biological engineering with creative design thinking to drive innovation in the development of new processes and products. It brings together expertise in biotechnology, synthetic biology, and laboratory automation to enable the design of efficient and sustainable biological systems. The programme provides advanced training in both theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills, alongside opportunities to design and execute independent research projects. Areas of application include the development of sustainable food alternatives such as synthetic meat substitutes and dairy-free milk, as well as bio-based materials like adaptive building systems and petroleum-replacement products. Additional focus is placed on healthcare innovations, including designer antimicrobial compounds for improved infection control and smart drug delivery systems that enable precise therapeutic delivery. Delivered by research-active and industry-experienced academics, the programme equips students with strong foundations in design thinking, cutting-edge biotechnology, and applied research methodologies. It prepares graduates for research-focused careers and roles within the biotechnology industry, with a strong emphasis on addressing global challenges such as sustainability, food security, environmental protection, healthcare advancement, water and waste management, and climate change mitigation.
