Curriculum and Course Modules
The MS in Communication Disorders curriculum consists of 46 credits of required coursework, 6 credits of elective coursework, and 8 credits of clinical education. Courses are organized in a progressive sequence covering the biological, neurological, physiological, social, and behavioral foundations of speech, language, swallowing, and hearing. Clinical practicum schedules may include days, evenings, and Saturdays to provide comprehensive real-world training.
Speech Sound Disorders and Motor Speech
3 CreditsExamines the assessment and treatment of articulation, phonological, and motor speech disorders across the lifespan, with emphasis on evidence-based diagnostic and intervention approaches.
Language Disorders in Children
3 CreditsFocuses on the identification, assessment, and intervention of language disorders in pediatric populations, including developmental language disorders, literacy-related challenges, and culturally responsive practice.
Adult Neurogenic Communication Disorders
3 CreditsCovers the evaluation and treatment of acquired communication disorders in adults, including aphasia, traumatic brain injury, right hemisphere damage, and dementia-related conditions.
Dysphagia: Swallowing and Feeding Disorders
3 CreditsProvides in-depth study of the anatomy, physiology, assessment, and management of swallowing and feeding disorders across the lifespan, integrating instrumental evaluation techniques.
Voice and Fluency Disorders
3 CreditsAddresses the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of voice disorders and fluency disorders such as stuttering, with attention to both pediatric and adult populations.
Clinical Practicum and Externship
8 CreditsIncludes in-house practicum at the Mercy University Speech and Hearing Center and externship experiences at partner facilities, requiring a minimum of 375 direct clinical contact hours as mandated by ASHA.
