Founded in 1965 as Leeds Music Centre, the institution has been a pioneer in creative arts education. It launched Europe's first jazz degree in 1993 and became the first UK conservatoire to offer degrees in popular music and music production in 2004. In 2020, it adopted the name Leeds Conservatoire to reflect its expanded specialist approach to both music and drama training.
The conservatoire is part of the Luminate Education Group and its degrees are validated by the University of Hull. It is a member of Conservatoires UK, the European Association of Conservatoires, and the Berklee International Network. In 2019, it became the first UK conservatoire to remove audition fees for all courses, reinforcing its commitment to accessible education.
