Publishing
Kingston University, United Kingdom
Previous graduates have progressed into a wide range of roles across the publishing sector, including editorial, digital publishing, journals, production, and related creative industries.
During the course, you will explore all aspects of the global publishing industry, from its structure, business models, and production processes to legal considerations, idea development, copyright, and intellectual property. You will also develop a strong understanding of product development, editing, marketing, publicity, acquisitions, and rights management, gaining insight into how successful publishing projects are created and sustained.
Teaching is delivered through a rich blend of masterclasses, guest lectures from industry professionals, tutorials, seminars, and practical workshops. These sessions are designed to develop both your creative and professional skills, preparing you to thrive in a competitive workplace. You will examine the sales and distribution of both physical and digital products and gain hands-on experience with industry-standard tools and resources, including Nielsen BookScan, BSI proofreading symbols, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Premiere Pro.
Throughout the programme, you will have opportunities to apply your learning in practical contexts. This includes completing either a dissertation or a practice-based project, as well as undertaking a 10-day work placement to gain valuable industry experience. You will also produce books for commercial publication through Kingston University Press, working collaboratively with authors and partner organisations. These experiences ensure you graduate with a strong portfolio, practical insight, and the professional confidence needed to succeed in the publishing industry.
