Mechanical Engineering MEng at Kingston University: Program Overview
The Mechanical Engineering MEng at Kingston University immerses you in a curriculum designed for the real world, providing a strong theoretical background and excellent hands-on skills in engineering design, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, applied mechanics, and electronics. The program equips you with crucial skills in business and project management while emphasising sustainable practices aligned with key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
This course offers both a Mechanical Engineering pathway and an Automotive Engineering pathway, allowing you to develop specialised knowledge tailored to your career ambitions. The MEng contains an extra year of advanced-level study compared to the BEng, enabling deeper exploration of areas such as computer-aided design and advanced mathematics.
Through team-based design activities and industrially-based projects, you will have extensive opportunities to enhance your communication skills and develop your ability to work collaboratively. Kingston University's Future Skills programme is embedded within the course, helping you develop the graduate attributes most valued by employers, including problem-solving, digital competency, and adaptability.
Key Program Highlights
- MEng fully meets the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers
- Access to industry-standard facilities including a 3D design studio, mechanical engineering workshop, materials lab, and automotive testing facilities at the Roehampton Vale campus
- Kingston University holds a Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) Gold rating in all three categories: overall, student experience, and student outcomes
- Embedded Future Skills programme develops employer-valued graduate attributes such as problem-solving, digital competency, and adaptability
Curriculum and Modules
The MEng program is structured over four years, with MEng and BEng students taking the same modules until Year 3 when the routes diverge. The final year of the MEng provides advanced-level study with a strong emphasis on independent learning and an industrially focused group project. Teaching includes lectures, seminars, tutorials, and practical laboratory sessions, supported by design classes, workshops, and site visits.
Provides a solid foundation in core mathematical and computational skills required for modern engineering practice, including scripting and problem-solving using MATLAB, Excel, and Python.
Covers mechanical properties of materials, types of loading, plane-stress and plane-strain conditions, design of beams, torsion of shafts, and buckling, enabling you to design solid components and structures.
Introduces operational amplifiers, circuit analysis, filters, oscillators, ADC and DAC signal conversion techniques, Boolean algebra, and logic circuits alongside control systems and computing fundamentals.
Explores the fundamental principles of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, providing the theoretical and practical knowledge essential for analysing and designing thermal and fluid systems in engineering applications.
Takes students from 2D conventional engineering drawing to 3D digital modelling using feature-based and free-form techniques, covering finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and CAM software for optimising design and manufacturing.
