Creative Writing
Kingston University, United Kingdom
The Creative Writing MA is designed for graduates who wish to deepen their creative practice and engage critically with writing as both an art form and a professional discipline. The programme provides a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment in which students can experiment, refine their craft, and develop confidence as writers.
Students work across a range of forms and genres, including fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, scriptwriting, and experimental writing. Workshop-based learning forms the core of the course, encouraging peer feedback, discussion, and reflection. These sessions are supported by critical reading and contextual study, enabling students to situate their work within literary, cultural, and theoretical frameworks.
The programme places strong emphasis on developing an individual writing voice and a reflective creative practice. Students are encouraged to take creative risks, explore new approaches, and engage thoughtfully with feedback. Alongside creative development, the course builds advanced skills in editing, research, and critical analysis.
Professional development is embedded throughout the programme, with opportunities to explore publishing contexts, authorship, and creative career pathways. Students gain transferable skills in communication, project management, and presentation, supporting future employment in the creative industries.
A final major project allows students to produce a substantial and original body of creative work, often accompanied by a critical commentary. Graduates of the Creative Writing MA are well prepared for careers as writers, editors, content creators, and arts professionals, as well as for further academic research or doctoral study.
