Ancient History (Master)
Bourg-en-Bresse Campus, France
Overview
This master's degree, co-accredited with the University of Lyon 2, the University of Savoie Mont-Blanc, and the ENS de Lyon, aims to train students specializing in the Sciences of Antiquity, by providing them with multidisciplinary training focused on research.
The "Ancient History" track trains specialists in the history of the ancient worlds, from the Near East to the Iberian Peninsula, from the 3rd millennium BC to the early Middle Ages. The training is based on the acquisition of methods and knowledge in ancient history and is complemented by the acquisition of skills in ancient and modern languages and in the field of digital humanities applied to ancient sources.
A common core of lectures and seminars familiarizes students with the major periods, phases, civilizations, and chrono-cultural areas that articulate knowledge of the ancient worlds. The training combines research seminars, modern language courses, research methodology, introduction to auxiliary historical sciences (epigraphy, numismatics, archaeology, etc.), and digital humanities applied to ancient sources.
Specificities:
Students must produce an original research paper (pre-dissertation in M1, dissertation of around one hundred pages with defense in M2).
A mandatory internship in a professional environment during M1 can take various forms (excavations, reception in a research laboratory, internship in a museum, a library, in a high school, etc.).
