Civil Engineering & Infrastructure
Program Overview: Civil Engineering Technology at Humber Polytechnic
Humber Polytechnic's Civil Engineering Technology advanced diploma program equips you with the skills needed for a career in the growing field of civil infrastructure. Infrastructure encompasses all of the essential elements necessary for society to operate, including buildings, transportation systems, municipal services, and green spaces.
The curriculum, designed in collaboration with industry, covers all aspects of infrastructure from the inception of an idea to the completion of construction and blends in-class academic learning with hands-on laboratory work. You will learn how to design structural steel, reinforced concrete, and timber structures, while also exploring municipal services such as water and wastewater management.
Courses are taught by experienced faculty and industry experts, many of whom work with Greater Toronto Area construction and engineering firms. Continuing investment in infrastructure development and redevelopment in the GTA has resulted in strong job placement for graduates in recent years.
Key Program Highlights
- Industry-designed curriculum covering structural design, transportation, municipal services, and environmental remediation
- Hands-on laboratory work combined with in-class academic learning across all six semesters
- Optional co-op and work placement opportunities providing paid, real-world engineering experience
- Training in industry-standard tools including AutoCAD, BIM, GIS, and geomatics surveying equipment
Curriculum & Modules
The Civil Engineering Technology curriculum is structured across six semesters over three years. It provides a comprehensive foundation in engineering mechanics, structural design, transportation, environmental systems, and construction management, all supported by practical lab work and project-based learning.
Students learn fundamental concepts in engineering mechanics including motion, vectors, Newton's Laws, and the fundamentals of statics such as forces, equilibrium, and trusses in preparation for advanced structural courses.
Covers the design of structural steel, reinforced concrete, and timber structures using Canadian design codes and standards. Students apply strength of materials principles to real-world structural problems.
Students study transportation infrastructure and highway design using established design codes and standards, including road geometry, traffic analysis, and pavement design.
Explores municipal services including water supply, wastewater treatment, and stormwater management systems. Students learn the engineering principles behind urban water infrastructure.
Provides training in surveying techniques, geomatics, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) used to support civil engineering design and construction projects.
