The BA (Hons) Textile Design programme at Glasgow School of Art prepares you for a future in fashion, interiors, product, automotive, film and television, material innovation, colour, trend forecasting, and other creative areas. Founded in 1845, GSA is one of the few remaining independent art schools in the UK and is internationally recognised as one of Europe's leading institutions for visual creative disciplines.
The curriculum combines practical and theoretical courses across two academic semesters each year, with project-based learning at the heart of studio activity. You will develop your creative identity through skills in research, drawing, colour, design, technical and material investigation, sampling, production, and visualisation of textiles. The programme offers the opportunity to study weave, knit, print, and embroidery before choosing a specialisation.
Sustainable and responsible design thinking is embedded throughout the programme, informing your approaches, practices, and outcomes. Curriculum and Modules
The BA (Hons) Textile Design curriculum is structured around incremental project-based experiences across four years of study. Studio courses are complemented by Design History and Theory, collaborative interdisciplinary modules such as Co-Lab and Design Domain, and opportunities for industry engagement and international exchange.
Core studio practice covering weave, knit, print, and embroidery techniques. Students develop skills in sampling, production, and visualisation of textiles through project-based learning.
Explores critical and contextual perspectives on design, providing a theoretical foundation that informs and enriches studio practice.
Develops observational and expressive drawing skills alongside a deep understanding of colour theory and its application in textile design.
An interdisciplinary collaborative module shared with other programmes, fostering expanded perspectives by connecting broader domains of learning and knowledge.
