Discover the Glasgow School of Art: A Legacy of Creative Excellence
Discover the Glasgow School of Art: A Legacy of Creative Excellence
Founded in 1845 as the Glasgow Government School of Design, the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) is one of the few remaining independent art schools in the United Kingdom. Offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and research degrees in architecture, fine art, and design — all validated by the University of Glasgow — the GSA draws talented individuals from over 100 nationalities who share a passion for visual culture and creative practice.
The school is housed in a cluster of buildings around Renfrew Street on Garnethill in central Glasgow. Its most famous building, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh between 1896 and 1909, became an internationally celebrated icon of Art Nouveau architecture before being severely damaged by fires in 2014 and 2018. The Reid Building, designed by Steven Holl Architects and completed in 2014, now serves as a key teaching facility on campus.
GSA has produced most of Scotland's leading contemporary artists, including six Turner Prize winners since 2005 — a phenomenon often called the 'Glasgow Miracle.' The school's Creative Network includes over 22,000 graduates across 95 countries, and approximately 60% of graduates choose to remain in Glasgow, sustaining the city's position as one of the UK's leading creative centres.
