About Edge Hill University: History and Heritage

Edge Hill University is a public university based in Ormskirk, Lancashire, in North West England. Founded in 1885 as Edge Hill College on Durning Road in Liverpool, it holds the distinction of being the first non-denominational teacher training college for women in England. The institution relocated to its current purpose-built campus in Ormskirk in 1933 and has since evolved into a comprehensive modern university.

After gaining Taught Degree Awarding Powers from the Privy Council in 2005, Edge Hill was granted full university status on 18 May 2006. Today it offers over 250 undergraduate and postgraduate courses across three faculties: Arts and Sciences, Health Social Care and Medicine, and Education. The Faculty of Education holds an Ofsted Outstanding rating for Initial Teacher Education.

Edge Hill has invested more than GBP 350 million over the past decade in campus facilities, including the GBP 26 million Catalyst library and learning hub, a GBP 30 million sports complex, and a GBP 13 million Tech Hub. A further GBP 52 million redevelopment is delivering new Life Sciences facilities, a Students Union building, and modern accommodation, reinforcing the university's commitment to providing an exceptional student experience.
