Program Overview: Advanced Air Mobility Systems MSc
The Advanced Air Mobility Systems MSc at Cranfield University equips you with the skills required to pursue a successful career in transforming the aviation industry, applying knowledge to introduce new automated and autonomous solutions for a safe, orderly and integrated airspace where uncrewed aerial systems operate alongside crewed aircraft. This program directly addresses the significant demand for talented graduates who can unlock the full potential of Advanced Air Mobility applications.
Taught through a unique combination of theoretical and practical-based sessions, you will cover subjects in Air Traffic Management, Uncrewed Traffic Management, enabling sensor infrastructure including communications, navigation and surveillance, sensor fusion, and artificial intelligence for autonomous systems. The MSc course content has been developed with advice from an Industrial Advisory Board comprising representatives from major aerospace companies to small and medium-sized enterprises.
Cranfield was the first university to offer an MSc in this subject area, covering dynamics, control systems, autonomous systems and technology. A key feature of the program is the inclusion of a CAA-approved UAV remote pilot competence course, enabling students to gain practical flight experience and certification to operate small UAVs in the Open Category upon successful completion.
Key Program Highlights
- First university globally to offer an MSc in Advanced Air Mobility Systems, pioneering education in this emerging field since 2022
- Includes a CAA-approved UAV remote pilot competence course with ground school and practical flight training
- Industry Advisory Board shapes curriculum and recommends real-world thesis and project topics for career relevance
- Access to Cranfield's unique global research airport and large-scale aerospace test environments
Curriculum & Modules
The MSc course consists of three weighted components: taught modules, a group design project, and an individual research project. The taught course element includes eight compulsory modules generally delivered from October to March, covering the fundamentals of Air Traffic Management and communications systems and progressing to core subjects of sensor fusion, guidance and navigation, AI for autonomous systems, and Uncrewed Traffic Management.
Introduction to Advanced Air Mobility
Core ModuleProvides an overview of Advanced Air Mobility and Autonomous Systems, including current ATM, UAM and UTM ecosystems, airspace structures, enabling technologies, Systems Engineering principles, safety, regulatory context, and ethical considerations of unmanned and autonomous systems.
Air Traffic Management Systems
Core ModuleDelivers understanding of current and future ATM and ATC systems, their functional architectures, main algorithms and applications. Covers ATC technologies, FANS, air traffic flow management models, ATM automation decision support tools, and regulatory and technical context with emphasis on digitalisation and increased automation.
Communications Systems
Core ModuleProvides skills and understanding of radio systems, air-to-air and air-to-ground communications, and an overview of current approaches to line-of-sight and beyond-line-of-sight techniques essential for advanced air mobility operations.
Sensor Fusion for Autonomous Systems
Core ModuleProvides an overview of sensor fusion architectures, algorithms and applications in the context of autonomous vehicles navigation, guidance and control for both linear and non-linear systems. Includes tools for error analysis, diagnostic statistics and heuristics to evaluate sensor fusion performance.
Artificial Intelligence for Autonomous Systems
Core ModuleEnables you to categorise AI methods for real-life Autonomous Systems applications, assess applicability of AI algorithms, set up commonly used AI algorithms in the autonomous systems context, and evaluate performance in simulation environments.
Guidance and Navigation for Autonomous Systems
Core ModuleDelivers fundamental and critical understanding of classical and advanced guidance and navigation theories, evaluating their nature, purposes, advantages, limitations and characteristics. Enables you to critically select and design appropriate guidance and navigation for specific autonomous systems.
