Program Overview: Woodworking Technician at Conestoga College

The Woodworking Technician program at Conestoga College provides you with a solid foundation in the skills and technology involved in the manufacture of furniture, cabinets, and architectural millwork. Delivered at the Woodworking Centre of Ontario, one of the most advanced woodworking training facilities in North America, this two-year Ontario College Diploma equips you with modern manufacturing techniques and hands-on expertise.

During the first year, you will spend significant time learning the set-up and operation of woodworking machinery and equipment, including laminating, veneering, machining, sanding, assembly, and finishing. The second year is devoted to extensive project work, introduction to production management skills, and the manufacturing of kitchen cabinets and architectural millwork.

Levels 1, 2, and 3 of the trade schooling for an Ontario Cabinetmaker Apprenticeship are embedded in the program, providing you with a recognized advantage when starting your career. An optional co-op stream is available, offering one co-op work term between years 1 and 2 for real-world industrial experience.

Curriculum & Modules

The Woodworking Technician curriculum combines theoretical knowledge with extensive hands-on training across four academic semesters. You will progress from foundational machine operation and materials science to advanced project work, CNC programming, and production management, preparing you for a career in the woodworking manufacturing industry.

Woodworking Materials & Safety

Explore the variety, grades, physical properties, preparation, and uses of materials commonly used in the trade. Learn the responsibility and methods of maintaining a safe working environment in compliance with all applicable legislation.

Drafting & Computer-Aided Design (CAD)

An introduction to drafting fundamentals from free-hand sketching to 2-Dimensional computer-aided design. Topics include orthographic projection, section views, annotation, and creating detailed technical drawings for woodworking applications.

Woodworking Machinery & Equipment Operation

Learn to set up, operate, and maintain hand and power tools as well as a wide range of production machinery and equipment used in wood products manufacturing. Covers machine maintenance, motor and spindle speeds, drive systems, bearings, and lubricants.

CNC Fundamentals for Woodworking

A basic introduction to the fundamentals of computer numerical control for woodworking. You will gain general knowledge of basic CNC programming skills and machine operation for various woodworking CNC equipment.

Wood Finishing & Colour Control

Examine the principles of colour control and the theory of colour and light as they relate to the furniture industry. Learn to use safely and effectively a variety of industrial wood finishing equipment and techniques.

Kitchen Cabinet & Architectural Millwork Manufacturing

Apply your accumulated skills to the manufacturing of kitchen cabinets and architectural millwork through extensive project work. Includes introduction to production management skills and real-world manufacturing scenarios.
