Renewable Energy Techniques Program Overview

The Renewable Energy Techniques certificate program at Conestoga College is designed to give you the skills and knowledge needed to effectively create, install, and maintain functional renewable energy systems. You will be introduced to the different sectors of the renewable energy field, exploring both theoretical and practical applications in solar power, wind, solar thermal technologies, and other forms of alternative energies.

The program is centered around four key themes: Renewable Power Generation, covering in-depth study of solar (PV and thermal), wind, hydro, and biofuel energy systems; Energy Storage and Management, emphasizing battery technologies, energy modeling, grid integration, and system optimization; Sustainable Building Practices, focusing on green construction, building codes, LEED, and other sustainability certifications; and Electrical Safety fundamentals.

As a Renewable Energy Techniques student, you will gain hands-on experience and technical proficiency in PV and wind system design, sizing, and installation; site assessment for solar and wind projects; battery storage systems including lead-acid and lithium-ion; and energy modeling software and consumption tracking. This practical training prepares you for entry-level positions in the rapidly growing clean energy sector.

Program Highlights

  • Hands-on training in solar PV, wind energy system design, sizing, and installation with industry-standard equipment
  • Comprehensive coverage of battery storage technologies, energy modeling, and grid integration
  • Focus on sustainable building practices including LEED, Green Globes, BREEAM, and Net Zero Energy certifications
  • Delivered at the Cambridge - Fountain Street campus with multiple intake options including September, January, and May

Curriculum & Course Modules

The Renewable Energy Techniques curriculum combines theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on training across two academic terms. You will study a range of subjects from renewable power generation to sustainable construction practices, ensuring you graduate with a well-rounded skill set for the clean energy industry.

Renewable Power Generation

In-depth study of solar photovoltaic and thermal systems, wind energy, hydro power, and biofuel energy systems. Students learn the principles of energy generation and system design for each renewable technology.

Energy Storage and Management

Focuses on battery technologies including lead-acid and lithium-ion systems, energy modeling, grid integration, and system optimization. Students gain proficiency in energy modeling software and consumption tracking.

Sustainable Building Practices

Explores green construction from a contractor or builder perspective, covering rating systems such as LEED, Green Globes, BREEAM, and Net Zero Energy. Emphasis is placed on reducing environmental impact and using alternative building materials.

Introduction to AutoCAD

An introductory course designed for students with limited or no CAD experience, presenting the basic tools and skills necessary to function in AutoCAD for renewable energy system design and technical drawing.

College Reading and Writing Across Contexts

Explores the intersections of reading, writing, and critical thinking with emphasis on academic and workplace competencies. Students develop the ability to analyze texts, construct well-supported arguments, and communicate effectively.

Conestoga 101

A self-directed orientation course introducing students to the supports, services, and opportunities available at Conestoga College. Students learn about academic expectations, health and wellness services, and co-curricular learning opportunities.

Elective & Complementary Courses

Alternative Energy Technologies (Biomass, Geothermal, Hydroelectricity) Project Management for Renewable Energy Electrical Safety and First Aid/CPR Site Assessment for Solar and Wind Projects
