Program Overview: Packaging Engineering Technician
The Packaging Engineering Technician program at Conestoga College teaches you how to combine the basic principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering, and business to design and evaluate packaging using different materials including metal, glass, plastic, paper, and corrugated boards. You will gain hands-on experience testing packaging solutions using standard industry-grade equipment and may partner directly with industry organizations on real projects.

The Packaging Engineering Technician program is structured across four academic levels over two years, building from foundational packaging science to advanced design and engineering applications. Students develop practical competencies through lab work, software-based design projects, and applied engineering problem-solving.
Introduction to computer software commonly used in the packaging industry, including ArtiosCAD for corrugated and paperboard industries, TOPS, Excel, PowerPoint, and Sway for broad-based industry applications.
Study of the characteristics of various rigid and flexible packaging forms used in packaging design, including metal, glass, plastic, paper, and corrugated materials and their manufacturing processes.
Examination of major packaging laws such as the Consumer Packaging and Labeling Act and the Food and Drug Act, particularly as they impact package design and compliance requirements.
Design of protective packaging systems to prevent and solve hazards encountered in product distribution, covering cushioning, containment, and transport considerations.
Application of packaging testing techniques to verify compliance with quality specifications, regulations, and industry expectations throughout the packaging development process.
