The Motive Power Fundamentals – Automotive Repair certificate program at Conestoga College is a one-year, hands-on program designed to launch your career as an automotive service technician. Through a combination of practical shop activities and theory-based classes, you will develop the essential technical skills needed to enter the automotive repair industry with confidence.

Throughout the program, you will build a strong foundation in automotive systems, including engines, electrical components, drive trains, suspension, steering, and brakes. You will practice safe working procedures using industry-standard tools, machinery, and equipment in over 20,000 square feet of combined shop space at Conestoga's Cambridge campus.

In addition to technical training, you will be introduced to fundamental business concepts and career-applicable skills relevant to the motive power industry. Successful graduates may be eligible for an exemption from the Level 1 portion of the Automotive Service Technician apprenticeship in-school training, giving you a significant head start in the trade.

Curriculum and Course Modules

The Motive Power Fundamentals – Automotive Repair program covers a comprehensive range of technical and professional courses across two semesters. The curriculum is designed to align with Level 1 apprenticeship standards and balances hands-on shop training with classroom theory and communication skills development.

Automotive Systems and Safety Fundamentals

An overview of motive power safety, WHMIS/GHS, automotive systems, and functional concepts of electrical theories and systems. Students perform shop tasks including inspection and service of various automotive systems while developing safe and efficient work habits.

Engine Components and Systems

Students learn to identify, inspect, and test basic engine components and systems in compliance with manufacturers' recommendations. Topics include engine operation principles, component identification, and diagnostic fundamentals.

Electrical, Electronic, and Emission Systems

This course covers the identification, inspection, and testing of basic automotive electrical, electronic, fuel, and emission components and systems. Students apply fundamental knowledge of electrical theory to automotive applications.

Drive Train Components and Systems

Students develop skills in identifying, inspecting, and testing basic drive train components and systems. The course covers transmission, driveline, and final drive assemblies in compliance with manufacturers' specifications.

Suspension, Steering, and Brake Systems

This module focuses on identifying, inspecting, and testing basic suspension, steering, and brake components and systems. Students learn safe procedures for servicing these critical vehicle safety systems.

Welding Fundamentals

Students learn the fundamentals of Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) processes as well as oxy-fuel welding and cutting. Topics include safe operating principles, equipment setup, and troubleshooting.
