Beykent University, Turkey
The History Department offers a rigorous and comprehensive 4-year undergraduate program aimed at educating students to become original, analytical, and well-rounded historians. The department's primary mission is to train individuals who can comprehend and interpret historical events with depth and objectivity, develop systematic and critical thinking skills, and apply effective research methods. Students are encouraged to cultivate a broad intellectual horizon and the ability to assess the past not only through facts but also by understanding historical contexts, narratives, and perspectives.
Throughout the program, students are introduced to a wide range of historical periods, regions, and themes, allowing them to gain a holistic view of human history. The curriculum is designed to cover major civilizations, political transformations, economic developments, cultural evolutions, and social changes from ancient times to the modern era. Special emphasis is placed on Turkish history, including the Ottoman Empire, Seljuk period, and Republican era, while also offering comparative insights into world history, including European, Middle Eastern, and Asian civilizations.
Courses are structured to develop students’ abilities to conduct historical research using primary and secondary sources, evaluate historical evidence, construct coherent arguments, and write academically. The program also emphasizes historiography—the study of how history is written—and equips students with the tools to critically engage with different interpretations and methodologies.
In addition to theoretical knowledge, the department offers seminars, project-based learning, and access to archival and library resources, fostering practical experience in historical inquiry. Students are encouraged to explore diverse topics such as political history, military history, cultural and intellectual history, history of religion, gender history, and the history of everyday life. Elective courses provide flexibility, enabling students to specialize in particular interests or time periods.
The language of instruction in the department is Turkish, and the program is supported by faculty members who are experts in their respective fields and actively involved in research and academic publishing. Students benefit from a dynamic academic environment that promotes discussion, analysis, and independent thinking.
Graduates of the History Department are well-prepared for careers in education, research, archival and museum work, cultural heritage institutions, publishing, journalism, public administration, and diplomacy. The analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills acquired during the program also serve as a solid foundation for graduate studies and various interdisciplinary fields in the humanities and social sciences.
