Program Overview: M.Sc. in Data Science
The M.Sc. in Data Science at Warsaw University of Technology is run by the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Science and is among the first European programs fully focused on data engineering and data analytics. It provides in-depth knowledge and skills needed to process and analyse the growing volumes of structured and unstructured data that define today's industries.
The program places particular emphasis on natural language processing, network data analysis including social networks, and machine learning methods such as deep learning. Students also build strong programming skills in Python and gain hands-on experience with Big Data platforms including Apache ecosystems and Cloud Computing environments through collaboration with top cloud providers.
Each student selects a scientific advisor from among the faculty's active research staff, and the final semester is devoted primarily to M.Sc. thesis preparation. Students may also spend a semester at a cooperating European university through an exchange program, gaining valuable international academic experience.
Key Program Highlights
- One of the first European M.Sc. programs dedicated entirely to Data Science and data analytics
- Hands-on experience with Big Data platforms, Apache ecosystems, and Cloud Computing
- Strong focus on machine learning, deep learning, NLP, and artificial intelligence
- Opportunity for a semester abroad at cooperating European universities via exchange programs
Curriculum and Modules
The Data Science curriculum is structured across three to four semesters and combines rigorous theoretical foundations with practical, industry-relevant projects. Core modules cover the full data pipeline from acquisition and storage to processing, analysis, and visualization, culminating in an M.Sc. thesis in the final semester.
Machine Learning and Deep Learning
6 ECTSCovers supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms, neural network architectures, and deep learning methods for complex pattern recognition and predictive modeling tasks.
Big Data Processing and Cloud Computing
6 ECTSProvides hands-on experience with Apache platforms such as Spark and Hadoop, and cloud computing environments for scalable data storage, processing, and analysis.
Natural Language Processing
5 ECTSFocuses on computational methods for analyzing and generating human language, including text classification, sentiment analysis, information extraction, and language modeling.
Network Data Analysis
5 ECTSExplores methods for analyzing network structures including social networks, covering graph algorithms, community detection, link prediction, and influence propagation.
Data Engineering and Data Acquisition
5 ECTSCovers the design and implementation of data pipelines, data warehousing, ETL processes, and techniques for acquiring and integrating data from diverse structured and unstructured sources.
M.Sc. Thesis and Research Seminar
20 ECTSStudents work under a chosen scientific advisor to conduct original research and prepare a master's thesis addressing a real-world data science problem, presented and defended before a faculty committee.
