Program Overview: Master's in Artificial Intelligence Systems

The two-year Master's Degree in Artificial Intelligence Systems at the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science (DISI) of the University of Trento prepares graduates to be at the forefront of conceiving, designing, and developing intelligent systems. The program embraces a strongly multidisciplinary approach, combining AI methodologies with applications across robotics, natural language processing, computer vision, and cognitive science.

Developed in collaboration with the Department of Industrial Engineering (DII), the Center for Mind/Brain Sciences (CIMeC), and the Faculty of Law, this program offers a uniquely broad perspective on AI. Students benefit from substantial laboratory activities, hands-on projects, seminars by leading researchers and industry professionals, and internship opportunities that bridge theory and practice.

The University of Trento is part of the ELLIS network (European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems) and participates in the EIT Digital Master School program, giving students access to a vibrant European AI research ecosystem. Curriculum and Modules

The AIS curriculum is organized into mandatory foundational courses, in-depth elective courses, specialization paths, free-choice credits, an internship, and a thesis project. Students select from four curricula with distinct specialization areas, allowing them to tailor their studies to their career goals in AI research or industry.

Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence

12 ECTS

Covers core AI concepts including knowledge representation, automatic reasoning, planning, and search algorithms that form the foundation of intelligent systems design.

Machine Learning

12 ECTS

Provides comprehensive training in supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning methods, along with deep learning architectures and optimization techniques for modern AI applications.

Signal, Image and Video Processing

6 ECTS

Focuses on signal acquisition, processing, and interpretation of speech, images, and video data, with applications in artificial vision and multimedia analysis.

Natural Language Understanding

6 ECTS

Explores human language processing and technology, covering computational linguistics, text analysis, and dialogue systems for human-machine communication.

Law and Ethics in Artificial Intelligence

Examines legal frameworks, ethical principles, and regulatory considerations governing the design, deployment, and application of AI systems in society.

  • Undergraduate DegreeBachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Information Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Computer Science, with at least 12 ECTS in INF/01 or ING-INF/05 sectors
  • Alternative Degree BackgroundDegree in related disciplines with at least 36 ECTS in CHIM/03, CHIM/06-07, FIS/01-03, MAT/01-09 or SECS-S/01, and at least 12 ECTS in INF/01 or ING-INF/05
  • Academic PerformanceStrong academic record with competitive grades; admission is based on curriculum evaluation and ranking
  • Available PlacesApproximately 30 places per year, assigned through a selective evaluation procedure
  • International QualificationsDegrees obtained abroad are assessed based on the content of each individual course to verify equivalence
