Doctor of Medicine (MD) Program Overview

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences (COMLS) prepares students to become compassionate, skilled physicians through its innovative Rocket Medicine curriculum. Established in 1964 as the Medical College of Ohio and merged with the University of Toledo in 2006, COMLS has a long tradition of training physicians who serve diverse communities across Ohio and beyond.

The MD curriculum is a competency-based, longitudinally connected program structured into three phases: a foundational sciences phase, a clinical clerkship phase, and an advanced clinical experience phase. Students begin clinical exposure within their first year through the Integrated Clinical Experience (ICE) program, ensuring early hands-on patient interaction alongside foundational science coursework.

COMLS is fully accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), and graduates are eligible to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and apply for residency programs nationwide. The program also offers dual-degree options including MD/PhD, MD/MBA, MD/MPH, and MD/JD for students seeking interdisciplinary training.

Key Program Highlights

  • Innovative Rocket Medicine curriculum featuring competency-based, longitudinally connected medical education with early clinical experience starting in Year 1
  • State-of-the-art Interprofessional Immersive Simulation Center, a 65,000-square-foot facility integrating anatomy, surgical skills, and simulation training
  • Multiple dual-degree pathways available including MD/PhD, MD/MBA, MD/MPH, and MD/JD programs for interdisciplinary career preparation
  • Required rural Area Health Education Center (AHEC) rotations providing hands-on experience in underserved communities across Northwest Ohio
