University of South Wales: Overview and History

The University of South Wales (USW) is a public university in Wales with campuses in Cardiff, Newport, and Pontypridd. Formed on 11 April 2013 from the merger of the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales, Newport, USW is the second largest university in Wales by student numbers and one of the ten largest campus-based universities in the UK.

USW has roots stretching back over 180 years, tracing its heritage to the founding of the Newport Mechanics' Institute in 1841 and the South Wales and Monmouthshire School of Mines established in 1913. Today, the university offers over 500 undergraduate and postgraduate courses and welcomes students from more than 120 countries worldwide.

The university is recognised as a leader in applied research, working closely with industry partners such as the NHS, the Football Association of Wales, and Screen Alliance Wales. USW generates GBP 1.1 billion to the UK economy annually and is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2040.
