Program Overview: MSc Computer Science with Speech and Natural Language Processing
Speech and natural language processing is a rapidly evolving field at the cutting edge of AI and computer science. This MSc presents the core theories, models, and algorithms to enable the exploration of human language and speech, preparing graduates for impactful future careers in AI development, speech technology, and academic research.
The programme bridges computer science, machine learning, linguistics, and signal processing, driving transformative technologies such as chat and voice assistants, real-time machine translation, sentiment analysis, and speech recognition. Modules in natural language processing introduce you to the core technologies underpinning state-of-the-art AI tools.
By the end of the course, you will have mastered key skills in machine learning, natural language processing, speech production and perception analysis, and digital signal processing on real-world data. A third of your study time is devoted to an individual dissertation, where you collaborate closely with a member of staff to research topics such as machine learning, NLP, or speech recognition.
Key Program Highlights
- Accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS), partially meeting requirements for CITP and CEng registration
- Taught within a School where 99% of research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent in REF 2021
- Hands-on lab classes and computational exercises blending theoretical understanding with practical expertise
- Dissertation projects available within the university or at the premises of an industrial client
Curriculum and Modules
The MSc consists of 120 credits of taught modules and a 60-credit dissertation. You study taught modules during two 15-week semesters in autumn and spring, then complete your individual dissertation project over the summer period.
Natural Language Processing
15 creditsAn introduction to the computer processing of written natural language, covering core concepts, models, and algorithms for analysing and processing natural language data, exploring contemporary NLP systems, and discussing their strengths, limitations, and applications.
Speech Processing
15 creditsExplores why computer speech processing is an important and difficult problem, investigating speech representation in articulatory, acoustic, and auditory domains. Takes a multi-disciplinary approach drawing on linguistics, phonetics, and psychoacoustics, with digital signal processing foundations.
Speech Technology
15 creditsIntroduces the principles of speech technology, including automatic speech recognition using statistical modelling, speech synthesis and text-to-speech methods in spoken language systems. Includes project work involving implementation and assessment of a speech technology device.
Machine Learning and Adaptive Intelligence
15 creditsCovers core technologies underpinning modern artificial intelligence, introducing statistical machine learning and probabilistic modelling and their application to describing real-world phenomena. Provides grounding in state-of-the-art algorithms that allow computer systems to learn from data.
Text Processing
15 creditsIntroduces fundamental concepts in natural language text processing, covering techniques for handling text corpora and examining systems that require automated processing of large volumes of text. Focuses on modern quantitative techniques for text analysis and models for acquiring information from texts.
MSc Dissertation Project
60 creditsA research-led individual project supervised by a member of staff, completed during the summer. You can choose from a wide range of topics in areas such as machine learning, natural language processing, or speech recognition, with options to work within the university or at an industrial partner.
