The University of Salford is a public research university located in Salford, Greater Manchester, just over a mile from Manchester city centre. With roots dating back to the industrial revolution era, the university has evolved into a modern institution known for its strong industry links and practical, career-focused approach to education.
The university's origins trace back to the Pendleton Mechanics' Institute (founded in 1850) and the Salford Working Men's College (founded in 1858), which merged to form the Royal Technical Institute, Salford in 1896. The institution was granted university status on 10 February 1967 when Queen Elizabeth II handed over the Royal Charter, and in 1996 it merged with University College Salford to form the institution as it exists today.
Today, the University of Salford is organised into four academic schools and serves over 26,000 students from around the world. The university has a significant presence at MediaCityUK alongside the BBC and ITV, and 78% of its research has been rated as world-leading or internationally excellent in the Research Excellence Framework 2021.
