Program Overview: MA Erasmus Mundus Human Rights Policy and Practice

The MA Erasmus Mundus Human Rights Policy and Practice (EMHRPP) is a prestigious two-year joint master's programme designed for postgraduates who want to make a significant contribution to the human rights agenda internationally with civil society organisations, governments, and the public and private sectors. Taught across multiple European universities, this programme prepares you for an international career in the protection and promotion of human rights.

You will be exposed to legal, political, sociological and anthropological approaches to human rights promotion and protection in a globalised world. The programme is delivered by a consortium of four partner universities: the University of Gothenburg (Sweden, lead partner), the University of Deusto (Bilbao, Spain), the University of Roehampton (London, UK), and the Arctic University of Norway (UiT, Tromso).

At the centre of the programme is an attention to human rights practice in the areas of gender, childhood and religion. You will gain a thorough understanding of human rights issues through a multidisciplinary academic approach combining theory and practice in relation to law, sociology, social anthropology, international relations, civil society and political science.

Key Program Highlights

  • Study across four countries — Sweden, Spain, the UK, and potentially Norway — gaining a truly international and multicultural academic experience
  • Complete a professional internship at a human rights organisation in London during the third semester, building real-world practical experience
  • Engage with the Crucible Centre for Human Rights Research at Roehampton, a multidisciplinary research centre focused on contemporary human rights and migration issues
  • Graduate with a joint Degree of Master of Arts in Human Rights Policy and Practice, issued by the University of Gothenburg on behalf of the consortium

Curriculum and Modules

The EMHRPP curriculum spans four semesters across multiple European universities, combining rigorous academic study with professional development and practical experience. Each semester is hosted by a different partner university, offering a uniquely comprehensive and immersive approach to teaching and learning in the field of human rights.

Semester 2 at the University of Deusto (Spain) prepares you to produce and access quality human rights knowledge and evidence, and examines relativistic approaches to human rights in light of cultural and ethnic diversity.
