Northern and Rural Community Planning Bachelor
Prince George (Main Campus), Canada
The Bachelor’s in Northern and Rural Community Planning is an interdisciplinary undergraduate degree designed to address the social, cultural, environmental, and economic planning needs of northern, rural, and remote communities. The programme draws on planning theory, geography, environmental studies, Indigenous studies, and public policy to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of community planning in diverse regional contexts.
Students study key areas such as land-use planning, community and regional development, housing and infrastructure, environmental sustainability, resource management, and planning policy. Strong emphasis is placed on participatory and community-based planning approaches, ethical practice, and respectful engagement with Indigenous peoples, recognising the unique governance structures and cultural contexts of northern regions.
Throughout the programme, students develop essential skills in research, critical analysis, communication, project planning, and community consultation. Learning is delivered through lectures, seminars, case studies, and applied projects that encourage practical problem-solving and collaboration with communities.
Graduates of the Northern and Rural Community Planning Bachelor’s programme are well prepared for careers in municipal and regional planning, community development, Indigenous planning, environmental and land-use planning, and public administration. The degree also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in planning, public policy, geography, or related fields.
