Founded in 1175, the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE) is one of the oldest universities in Italy and Europe, established just a few decades after the University of Bologna. The institution was originally created by the city of Modena to provide legal education, with Pillio da Medicina from Bologna as its first professor.
In 1998, the modern University of Modena and Reggio Emilia was formed when the Reggio Emilia site was officially instituted, combining the ancient academic traditions of both cities into one unified institution. Today, UNIMORE operates across campuses in Modena, Reggio Emilia, and Mantua, offering 47 bachelor's programs, 42 master's programs, and 18 PhD programs across 13 departments.
