Program Overview: Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence
The Master's Degree in Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence is a two-year interdisciplinary program jointly organized by the University of Milano-Bicocca, the University of Milan, and the University of Pavia. Delivered entirely in English, it trains professionals capable of integrating advanced AI technologies into real-life contexts responsibly and effectively for humans.
The program shifts the focus of AI from stand-alone applications aimed at replacing humans to interactive systems where human and machine intelligence collaborate to overcome each other's limitations. Students tackle complex problems involving strategic goals, moral values, legal constraints, cognitive biases, and other psychological and social factors.
Graduates emerge as bridging figures between the hard skills of experienced developers and the soft skills needed to deploy AI applications responsibly in organizational, clinical, and legal contexts. The program offers three specialized curricula — Hybrid AI, Neuro-AI, and AI and Law — allowing you to tailor your studies to your career goals.
Key Program Highlights
- Joint inter-university degree offered by three leading Lombardy universities, broadening your academic network and credentials
- Three specialized curricula — Hybrid AI, Neuro-AI, and AI and Law — for a tailored learning experience
- Compulsory internship of up to 300 hours providing hands-on professional experience
- Strongly interdisciplinary approach combining computer science, philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and law
Curriculum and Modules
The 120 ECTS program is structured over two years and includes core courses, curriculum-specific modules, elective courses, a compulsory internship, and a final thesis. All curricula guarantee a minimum of 12 ECTS of computer science teaching in the first year, alongside at least 9 ECTS in laboratory activities. Students may attend courses across three campuses — University of Milan, University of Milano-Bicocca, and University of Pavia — depending on their chosen electives.
Mathematics for AI
6 ECTSFoundational mathematical concepts essential for understanding AI algorithms, including linear algebra, probability theory, and optimization methods applied to machine learning and data analysis.
Machine Learning
6 ECTSCovers the fundamentals and advanced techniques of machine learning, including supervised and unsupervised learning, neural networks, and model evaluation. A prerequisite programming course is required before sitting this exam.
Knowledge Representation and Reasoning
6 ECTSExplores methods for encoding knowledge in AI systems, including ontologies, logic-based reasoning, and semantic technologies that enable machines to process and interpret human knowledge structures.
Natural Language Processing
6 ECTSIntroduces computational techniques for understanding and generating human language, covering topics such as text classification, sentiment analysis, language models, and human-oriented NLP applications.
Programming
6 ECTSProvides essential programming skills for AI development, focusing on high-level and human-oriented programming paradigms used to build, test, and deploy intelligent systems.
Final Thesis
21 ECTSAn original research project demonstrating your ability to independently investigate a topic in human-centered AI, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical application. Students must have earned 99 ECTS before sitting the final examination.
