The University of Milan, commonly known as La Statale, was founded in 1924 from the merger of the Accademia Scientifico-Letteraria (active since 1861) and the Istituti Clinici di Perfezionamento (established in 1906). It is a major public research university and the largest in Lombardy, one of Europe's most dynamic and internationally oriented regions. The university is the only Italian member of the prestigious League of European Research Universities (LERU), a network of 24 leading research-intensive European institutions.
La Statale's campuses are spread across Milan's historic city center and the Citta Studi university district. The main headquarters occupy the Ca Granda, a magnificent Renaissance complex built in 1456 by Duke Francesco I Sforza and designed by the architect Filarete. The university also occupies the 18th-century Palazzo Greppi, designed by Giuseppe Piermarini, the architect of Milan's famous La Scala Theatre.
With 8 faculties, 2 schools, over 160 degree programs, 35 PhD programs, and 65 postgraduate schools, the university offers a comprehensive academic experience. More than 40 degree programs and over 20 doctoral programs are taught entirely in English, making La Statale increasingly attractive to international students from around the world.

- 1924: Founded by Luigi Mangiagalli through the merger of two historic academic institutions, with the first four faculties: Law, Humanities, Medicine, and Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences.
- 1958: The Rector's Office and Faculties of Humanities and Law permanently moved to the restored Ca Granda complex in Via Festa del Perdono after post-war reconstruction.
